Red Suns Series: Artwork Statement
In 2023 we experienced days with ominous red suns and thick skies that produced otherworldly sunsets and days dark as night from the smoke of dozens of wildfires burning in Canada. Although the artist doesn’t believe in God as a Man in the sky, she does believe in Mother Nature as God, and the same biblical parallels apply. As our planet heats up, dries up and burns, we are provided with apocalyptic yet sometimes beautiful reminders of where we are headed if we don’t take the actions we need to, to love and care for Mother Nature God.
“Burning Bush” depicts a fiery red sun and red skies reflected in thick brush. As God says to Moses from the Burning Bush in the Bible, “the place on which you are standing is holy ground”. Mother Nature reminds us in vibrant, menacing reds over cool greens and blues, that this ethereal beauty we stand in awe of is in perpetual danger.
“God Is Nigh” is taken from a line from TAPS, the Scout song and military funeral song that sings “Day is done, gone the sun, from the lake, from the hills, from the skies; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.” The red sun reflections in the grass remind the artist of the biblical “Footprints In the Sand” meme - a warm hint of Mother Nature/God’s presence, leading to a mesmerizing red sun, a subtle reminder in a magnificent scene, that Mother Nature is always near and is in danger.
“Heavenly Harbinger” reminds the artist of the biblical story of Malachi 4:1 which warns of the wrath that will be set upon those who do not listen to God (or Mother Nature) - a heavenly red orb hangs in thick yellow skies over a colorful scene that’s so entrancing that the message the red sun brings could easily be overlooked.
Each of these paintings aim to depict the sense of awe that God/Mother Nature can bring us in the form of colorful, supernatural beauty that also, if we’re paying attention, reminds us that Mother Nature (or God) is all around us, and forewarning us of the destruction we’re causing in the most scenic, showy, beautiful of ways that only Mother Nature God can.
