These two paintings were fueled by the news images of the war in Ukraine. I was listening to a lot of Ukrainian stories and music while painting these, soaking up the culture and it's stories through stories and song, trying to understand the situation we've seen unfolding in 2022.
The top one, "Ukraine is not Dead Yet" is named after an old Ukrainian poem. I was thinking about fighting for what you love even though it's difficult as fuck, and inspired by the women who stayed back to do just that.
The bottom one I named something like "The Ducklings Swims", named after a Ukrainian folk song about "hey Mom I'm going off to war". I was thinking about how those babies Putin didn't successfully kill can now grow up to take revenge... Like one of my favorite songs - Italian Mafia song Ninna Nanna Malandrineddu (so good).
